Weekend Plans: Jan 15th 2011

Some lucky folks (though not everyone) are ramping up for a long weekend. If you’re fortunate enough to have the day off to celebrate the life and work of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., then here are some things you might consider doing to fill your Saturday and Sunday. And even if you don’t have Monday off, you’re still welcome to participate.

Events & Activities

ACS Home Show, XL Center, Fri 1/14 through Sun 1/16, Free
The Hartford ACS Home Show is the first local home show of the year. It is being held at the XL Center (formerly Hartford Civic Center) Downtown, and this year they are offering free admission. They even have coupons for discounted parking at two local lots.

Golden Globes, Sun 1/16 at 8:00
Sunday night is our first opportunity to see the beautiful people of Hollywood strut their stuff on the red carpet. How is this related to real estate? Like last night’s dramatic College Football Championship Game, this is an excellent opportunity to have a little get together. One of my favorite parties from grad school was when the whole gang got together for a red carpet show. A bunch of people all sniping about the people and pageantry together is way more fun than watching the festivities alone with a pint of ice cream (not that either of us would ever do that). Oh, and I almost forgot, I’d like to thank the Hollywood Foreign Press for creating this event!

Open Houses

210 Terry Road, Hartford, $399,900, 1/16/2011 from 1:00 to 3:00
210 Terry Road in HartfordOn Sunday, stop in to take a look at some of the amazing architectural features of this West End home. It has crown molding like you wouldn’t believe, and a variety of wonderful spaces. Sure, it needs some work, but you went to the home show to get inspired, so you’re ready to take on some of the updating. The three room master suite (bedroom, office, dressing room, and full bath) is something you just don’t find every day. 6 bedrooms, 3.1 baths over 3,812 sqft on 0.37 acres. Two car garage, deck off the kitchen out to a level yard with mature landscaping and potting shed. More details and a photo tour are available.

237 Fern Street #115E, West Hartford, $250,000, 1/16/2011 from 1:00 to 3:00
237 Fern in West HartfordNot interested in a project? No need for any home improvements at this condo, it’s virtually new and fully updated. In fact, the kitchen at Fern Street rivals anything that will be on display at the home show … it’s FAB-u-lous! Come check it out if you have some time, though note it is an Active Adult 55+ community. 2 bedrooms, 2 baths over 1,411 sqft. Garage parking and air conditioning. More details and a photo tour are available.

What Else?

Send Kyle (KyleB@KyleB-RE.com) a quick note if you know of other events we should include … thanks!

  1. This weekend events- start your Income Taxes. That could be a fun one!

Speaking of which, since you guys know (as we claim you do) everything about Hartford, where on the assessor’s website can I see history of payments made of Motor Vehicle Taxes to Hartford?

  2. Whoo hoo! Income taxes! I think of that as more of an early February activity once all the tax statements arrive from employers and account custodians. But kudos to you for getting a jump on it.

Here is the website that shows real estate and car tax history for the City of Hartford (http://selfservice.hartford.gov/MSS/citizens/default.aspx). On the car tax portion, it looks like you will need to use 2009 as the year instead of the default 2011. I was able to pull up info on our cars using just our last name. Have fun!

  3. That house on Terry Road has some of the coolest wallpaper I have ever seen! I miss houses that look like this; houses are all so sanitized now before they go on the market. They somehow feel more like showrooms and less like homes. I also love those very original looking bathrooms. Slate roof, cast iron radiators, tons of bookcases, lovely yard, ideal neighborhood. Too bad I’m not in the market!
