One new law jumped out at me as important for homeowners.<\/p>\n<p>AN ACT CONCERNING SMOKE AND CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS AND ALARMS IN RESIDENTIAL DWELLINGS<br \/>\nPA 12-184\u2014sHB 5394<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cga.ct.gov\/2012\/SUM\/2012SUM00184-R02HB-05394-SUM.htm\">Summary<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cga.ct.gov\/2012\/ACT\/PA\/2012PA-00184-R00HB-05394-PA.htm\">Public Act<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This law requires battery operated smoke detectors to be installed in all single-family and two-family homes during any renovations done under a building permit.  Carbon monoxide detectors are also required if the building has an attached garage, fireplace, or any fuel-burning appliance.<\/p>\n<p>Installing smoke and carbon monoxide detectors is always a good idea, regardless of the law.  This seems like a good opportunity to remind people to check the batteries, and push the test buttons, on the systems they already have in place.
