Picking Your Home's Outerwear

Fall is a good time to paint the exterior of your home because the air is typically less humid and temperatures are lower. These are optimal conditions for paint to adhere which lengthens the life of your paint job and protects your home from water entry and wood rot. Just make sure the surface is prepped properly with scraping and sanding.

Actually picking the paint colors for your house is no small task. There are many things to consider; how many colors you’ll need depending on house style, trim, and molding, how the color of the roof affects your options, how the light strikes your house, and the colors of your neighbors’ homes and how they’ll contrast.

Most paint stores offer quart-sized containers or smaller that will let you test out a variety of colors. One of my neighbor’s is going through this process right now. They’ve picked the main trim color and are testing a host of colors.

It’s important to pick a color you’re happy with (and that hopefully your neighbors will be happy with), as it will last several years if applied properly. We’re all eagerly awaiting our neighbor’s final choice, as they’ve renovated many homes in our neighborhood and always do a great job. Happy painting!
