Real Estate Karma

Earl Hickey“You reap what you sow.”

“What goes around comes around.”

“Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.”

And my personal favorite, “You’ll get yours…”

Before I got into real estate, I never really gave much thought to these sayings. Karma was something that I was aware of, but didn’t pay much attention to. I mean, I watched Earl on Thursday nights. That was my level of involvement with giving thought to Karma.

Since I’ve joined the industry, I’ve seen that Karma plays out in many ways.

Personally I’ve had a handful of craptastic experiences where I lose business for one reason or another, much to my bewilderment because I can’t really figure out what I’ve done “wrong.” More often than not when this happens, something else comes along that was unexpected and is an equally good or better opportunity. Karma?

I’ve seen buyers that really, really push the limits on what they ask for during contract and inspection negotiations- to the point where they are just being big jerks. For example- I want the seller’s lawn mower, snow blower, yard clean up equipment, etc. Even better, I know of someone that asked for a case of wine from a seller that had an extensive wine collection. The deal blows up and the seller does better with the next buyer that comes along. Karma?

I’ve had buyers that miss out on house after house after house for one reason or another and finally get the perfect one for them. The sellers of that house are kind and thoughtful. They leave behind maps of their perennial gardens, give the buyers a tour of the home and show them how everything works before they move, introduce them to the neighbors. Karma?

I’ve interacted with agents that have less than stellar reputations based on past deals. Sometimes people like to be difficult just for the sake of being difficult. I’ve seen them lose deals for their clients simply because their reputation precedes them. Karma?

Maybe it’s just superstition, maybe it’s just coincidence, but more often than not it seems that good things happen when you’re doing the right thing and bad things happen when you’re not. So just keep that in mind, in all aspects of your life. Because you’ll get yours… 😉
