Can I Decorate for the Holidays?

Holiday Decorations at the Bergquist HouseholdWe tend to get an early start on the winter holidays at the Bergquist household. The three of us were out on Saturday evening purchasing our Christmas tree, sending money back to the motherland, Vermont. Yesterday we decorated the house and it appropriately looks like the North Pole barfed merriment on our walls, flat surfaces and just about any place where you could put red, green and sparkly things. Of course this really only happens because we have a one and a half year old who should fully enjoy the spirit of the holiday, not because she has a crazy mom that loves Christmas tchotchkes…

And as we decorate and celebrate, this time of year we always get the question from our sellers: Is it okay for me to put up my holiday decorations?

Our take? Yes, it is perfectly fine if you decorate your home. Just don’t go all Clark Griswold on it. Keep the glitz somewhat toned down, don’t completely clutter it up and maybe don’t put out the heirloom Hummels this year (little kids love to touch stuff). Do your baking and cooking. Just don’t go over the top with some crazy simmering cinnamon concoction on the stove (some people are really sensitive to certain smells).

Let people focus on your home, not your over the top holiday decorations. Remember, if you sell your house this season, you can go all out next year at your new place.

  1. Kimberly- We got our tree at Cedar Mountain Stone and Mulch at the intersection of Rte. 5 and 175 in Newington. We’ve been going there for the past 4 years. Nice folks from Barton VT. We paid $50 for the tree pictured here and it’s 8′ tall.
