Weekend Plans: Feb 12th 2011

Some say that the Super Bowl marks the beginning of the spring real estate market. It seems like a reasonable rule of thumb, though each year is a little different. February is about the time when both buyers and sellers begin to get more serious. The timing works out pretty well, especially for a buyer hoping to close on their new home in May or June. They can take February and March to find the right property, and then allow another 45 to 60 days for the closing and be ready to move in once the flowers are blooming.

Events & Activities

Whalers Hockey Fest 2011, Thu 2/10 through Tue 2/22
This Friday is the kickoff of a 13 day outdoor hockey extravaganza at Rentschler Field in East Hartford. It will be interesting to see how well the community supports the event since part of the goal (as I understand it) is to build support and momentum for a return of the NHL. Lots of local teams will have an opportunity to play outside, with the featured event being an NHL alumni game and a CT Whale game on Sat 2/19. This appears to be the official website, and here is the complete schedule.

Grammy Awards, Sun 2/13, 8:00pm
Musicians can make for interesting and unexpected TV. Put them on a red carpet, or on a big stage with bright lights, and strange stuff happens. Just the other day we heard the national anthem get messed up by a superstar singer, and then a weirdly futuristic halftime show. Plastic hair? Box headed dancers? Not the Peas’ finest hour. Odd things can happen on the awards shows too with the unique “fashion” and over-the-top performances. All our crazy favorites are going to be there!

Valentine’s Day, Mon 2/14, all day
Alert! Alert! This coming Monday is Valentine’s Day! Start making your plans and preparations now, whatever that means for you.

Open Houses

212 North Beacon Street, Hartford, Sun 2/13 from 1:00 to 3:00, $435,000
Sunday is your opportunity to see the fantastic West End home pictured above. Large spaces, terrific architecture, and just steps from Elizabeth Park. It’s not easy to find historic homes like this in Greater Hartford, so you definitely want to stop by if you’re in the market for a distinctive property. Admittedly, they’re not for everyone, but they have a scale and grandeur that is difficult to find in anything built after the 1930s. 5 bedrooms, 3.5 baths, 4,322 sqft. More details and a photo tour are available.

What Else?
